I wrote today’s piece to highlight how countries like Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia navigate shifting economic ties and political alliances in an era of heightened tensions between Washington and Beijing. My aim is to show how nonalignment and strategic hedging are deeply rooted in Southeast Asia’s political culture, and to consider what their potential economic and political strategies will be, in the coming years.
