China’s Going Full-Auto

China is undertaking a comprehensive and ambitious effort to establish itself as a global leader in the autonomous vehicle (AV) industry, building on the success it has already achieved in the electric vehicle (EV) sector. Since late 2023, the Chinese government has rolled out a series of regulatory frameworks and substantial financial investments aimed at accelerating the development and deployment of AV technology. The Chinese government has been proactive in crafting a regulatory environment that supports the deployment of AVs, particularly those equipped with level three and level four autonomous driving capabilities. Level three autonomy requires a human driver to be present in the vehicle, while level four allows for remote human monitoring only.
